In our busy and often hectic world, consciously seeking ways to relax is essential to stay well-balanced. The question is: how do you do that? We asked Jerome Wehrens.
Jerome Wehrens is a breathing expert and founder of B-Mind, an organisation from which he provides training aimed at promoting better health and a balanced body and mind.
At the age of 20, Jerome broke his back in an accident, followed by an intense period of fear, sadness, and despair. That moment he made a promise to himself: "If I get through this okay, I will do everything to keep my body and mind in balance." And he kept that promise.
After the accident, Jerome has studied many different breathing exercises and methods, among other things. Besides breathing, out of passion and interest, he studies everything that makes the difference in someone's energy level, the degree of happiness, and the improvement of health.
How does Jerome ensure sufficient balance in his own life? Here he shares his tips and insights.
You always have your breath with you. It's free and it will change your life if you learn to apply it properly.
“Because of my accident at age twenty, and a difficult childhood that preceded it, I started researching how I could become happier, healthier and more powerful in life. During that journey I came to realize that you can become the architect of your own life, take control and not have to see yourself as a victim.
My body is like a laboratory; I research, experience and learn. What works for me, I put in my 'toolbox' so that I can not only apply it for myself, but also pass it on to others.
Over the last few years, I have founded B-Mind and set up my own B-mind method. The aim is to grow old healthily and to inspire others with doing so. In an accessible, simple and effective way. Your health is highly linked to a life lived in balance. How to get there varies for everyone, which is why I like to guide people in finding the right way for them.”
I always start the day with a cold shower, followed by the '5 Tibetans' and breathing exercises.
“I listen carefully to the signals that indicate that I need to slow down, like less sleep, less motivation, and various physical conditions. I can then always fall back on my toolbox of tools, such as breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, hiking and being outdoors. And I also seek the connection with people around me.”
“I always start the day with a cold shower, followed by the '5 Tibetans' and breathing exercises. I apply my own method: B-Mind breathing. I do this for five minutes, a total of three times a day.
If I have enough time in a day, I like to exercise. This can be yoga, running, cycling, but also jumping on a trampoline. During the day I also like to stand on my head and where necessary I apply my own breathing method (always only 5 minutes).
In the evening I usually meditate. Twice a week I also give a live meditation class on my platform where others meditate with me. For meditation, I use various techniques, depending on what I find appropriate or what feels right in that moment.
So, during the day I collect proverbial pearls that I string together in a necklace during the evening. I end the day by naming what I am grateful for.”
Breathing is an entrance to your health, you can use it to regulate your emotions and reduce stress.
“Breathing has saved me when I was a mess. I have discovered that breathing is an entrance to your health, you can use it to regulate your emotions and reduce stress. These are three doors that I frequently open.
I am now also teaching others how to do this and I enrich breathing coaches with my knowledge. You always have your breath with you. It's free and it will change your life if you learn to apply it properly.”
“Make that change!”.
